We often share compressed air best practices as well as new ideas, insights, compressed air news and inspiring videos here on The Fifth Utility, the official blog of Atlas Copco Compressors.
We believe in passionate people who work tirelessly to design innovative technology that makes a difference in the world, however small. Whether designing an efficient compressor room or an air compressor that reduces energy consumption by up to 50%, innovative ideas start with passionate people. Top Five Ways to Design an Efficient Compressor Room:
- Choose a central location. A centralized compressor installation is preferable, regardless of industry. A centralized compressor room yields improved operational efficiency, easy access for service, noise control and simpler ventilation. However, if a separate compressor room is not available, there are other options to consider, including shared spaces or an outdoor installation.
- Make sure the compressor room has a solid foundation. Did you know that large compressors require a concrete slab foundation anchored to a solid soil base or bedrock? While many plants incorporate features to minimize external vibration, some installations may require vibration dampening in the room’s foundation.
- Properly ventilate the compressor room. Compressors generate heat that must be removed to keep the compressor room at an acceptable temperature. The best way to manage heat build-up is to recover the heat for use in other applications.
- Keep it clean. This tip seems obvious, but a clean and orderly compressor room is not always the norm. Compressors require clean intake air for proper operation; dirt particles can damage the compressor over time.
- “Weatherize” the room for both warm and cold temperatures. Well-maintained plants are often the most energy efficient and suffer from less downtime than plants that don’t make maintenance a top priority. Follow these essential steps to prepare your compressor room for both the heat of summer and the cold of winter.
