Get Your Compressed Air System Ready for Winter: Part 2

Last week we discussed how to begin getting your compressed air system ready for winter. Today we’re continuing the series with a focus on weatherization.

Weatherizing your compressed air system and facility is an important step when preparing for colder months to make sure your compressor continues operating efficiently. There are three steps to take to make sure your system is properly weatherized for all possible winter conditions.

Repair weather stripping

Check weather stripping and replace areas that are worn out. This includes outdoor piping or any equipment in poorly insulated areas. If your systems or rooms are insulated, check to make sure the insulation is still keeping heat inside.

Inspect drains and air intake valves

Openings that are exposed to the elements are especially vulnerable. Check your drains and intake valves to make sure they are working properly. If they are left open, snow or freezing rain can infiltrate the system, causing temperature issues and introducing potentially harmful particulates.

Plan weatherization

Weatherize your system biannually. Prepare your system for the highs and lows of summer and winter each spring and fall. Regularly planning your weatherization ensures that nothing is left to chance. If planned weatherization seems daunting, invest in a maintenance plan with your compressed air providers. This will help address any weatherization issues and keep your facility in top working order year-round.
