Five Ways to Reduce Environmental Impact Using Compressed Air

/

You might already know that compressed air typically accounts for up to 40 percent of a manufacturing facility’s total energy bill. In addition, energy consumption typically represents approximately 80 percent of the overall cost of a compressed air installation. Because compressed air uses so much energy, it is important that facilities look for ways to reduce their environmental impact to offset energy consumption. Plus, when you reduce your energy use, you increase cost savings; it’s a win-win situation.

We’re always looking for ways to be more innovative and more environmentally friendly. Here are some tips for reducing your environmental impact now and into the future.

  1. Reduce energy consumption – Reducing energy consumption seems like a broad task, but it’s easy when you know where to look for savings.  Atlas Copco’s VSD+ technology can reduce energy consumption by up to 50 percent and is available for 75 percent of the oil-injected screw compressor applications worldwide. If you’d like to learn more about VSD+ technology, fill out our Request a Quote form and an Atlas Copco representative will be in touch with you shortly.
  2. Take aim at your carbon footprint – We’ve undertaken a number of initiatives to reduce energy consumption, from upgrading to modern lighting and ventilation equipment to switching to more environmentally-friendly energy sources such as geothermal heating, wind and solar energy. We also work with new companies that join the Atlas Copco team to help them adapt to our industry-leading sustainability policies and business practices. This way, together we can partner to continually provide our customers with highly ethical, environmental and social standards.
  3. Reduce, reuse, recycle - We all know the importance of the three R’s in contributing to a healthier planet and there’s no time like the present to start recycling at home and at work. With energy recovery the heat byproduct of compressed air is reused in other processes such as heating water, instead of being diverted into the atmosphere. This is particularly useful in manufacturing plants that already need hot water for processes such as scalding, cleaning, sterilizing and steaming. Plus, when using recovered energy, the consumption of fuel can almost be completely offset.
  4. Upgrade and maintain equipment - Capital purchases may appear initially daunting for annual budgets and bottom lines, but more often than not upgrading equipment yields energy savings that reduce payback time substantially. Also, making sure your system runs as efficiently as possible is easy with periodic compressed air system audits and through advanced monitoring programs like SMARTLink. Learn more about SMARTLINK by visiting our service page, Monitor Your Products; or, download the SMARTLINK brochure.
  5. Never stop innovating – What are you doing to remain competitive in today’s fast-paced and global manufacturing world? Seeking out the best talent, upgrading to state-of-the-art equipment and developing efficient and sustainable practices are all ways to remain competitive, increase productivity and grow your market share. At Atlas Copco, we’re constantly innovating with new products and services that help our customers save money through improved energy efficiency and longer product life cycles.
