Big Idea, Small Compressor: Variable Speed Drive Inlet Valve

Today, we continue our series exploring the many innovations housed within the GA VSD+ range of compact oil-injected rotary screw compressors. Check out our previous post in the series on the compressor’s silent fan inspired by nature.

In some industries, plants require continuous operations around the clock. But, in many others, there is a varying demand for air production throughout the day and the air compressor output capacity must be regulated to match demand. However, managing air production by constantly stopping and starting the compressor wastes time and energy.

A variable speed drive compressor offers the capability to fine-tune compressor output to fluctuating compressed air demands. By varying the speed of its drive motor, as air demand decreases, the VSD lowers the delivered air flow as well as the electrical power consumption; reducing energy consumption to a minimum.

What’s the big idea?

Most compressors have an unload valve between their intake system and the drive train, which allows the compressor to unload or blow off when demand for air decreases. To increase efficiency in this process, the new GA VSD+ houses a new, mechanical inlet valve.

When air is taken in, the air inlet valve mechanically opens. When no air is needed, the valve detects the stop and closes, eliminating blow off losses while keeping the drive train pressurized. Because the drive train is already pressurized, it requires less energy to start the air compressor and reach full load capacity.
