We are celebrating Atlas Copco’s 140th anniversary today, on our blog and around the world. Here is a bit of our 140-year history, by the numbers.

1873 - Founded in Sweden as a manufacturer of railroad rolling stock.

1904 - Invented the piston compressor and began producing and marketing the new technology.

1950 - Began U.S. operations with the opening of offices in San Francisco and New York.

1955 – Introduced Atlas Copco’s first screw compressor.

1967 - Introduced both the world’s first mobile screw compressor that produced oil-free compressed air and the oil-free, stationary, Z Series.

1994 - Unveiled the world’s first economical to manufacture variable speed drive compressor.

1995-2010 - Introduced the world’s first Class Zero (ISO 8573-1 CLASS 0 - 2010) oil free compressor, revolutionary screw blower technology that is on average 30 percent more efficient than traditional lobe blowers and the world’s first compressor designed to reuse 100 percent of its required energy input as hot water within the manufacturing process.

2013 – Ranked 18th among the Global 100 Most Sustainable Companies, for the seventh time.
