Frequently Asked Questions: Repair or Replace?

Two weeks ago, we began a short series on frequently asked questions in the compressed air industry. In our first post, we discussed ways to reduce energy costs associated with your air compressor. You can read the first post here.

Question: Is it less expensive to repair my old air compressor or buy a new one?

The answer to this question varies depending on the nature of the repair. If the compressor needs a new airend element and a new motor, then it will typically cost less to purchase a new compressor, rather than replace those critical parts.

Here’s a good rule of thumb for determining whether to repair or replace:

Consider purchasing a new compressor if the repairs will exceed 50-60% of the new purchase price.

Though purchasing a new compressor may seem to carry a hefty price tag at first, the payback time is probably shorter than you expect. Remember, a new compressor requires fewer repairs because all of the components are new, plus it comes with a warranty. And, most importantly, a new compressor will be more energy efficient, which will save money through ongoing reduced operating costs.
