John Senay, Product Marketing Manager - Piston and Oil Injected Screws <30kW, was recently interviewed by IMPO magazine about compressor technology and the future of energy efficiency. This is the third installment in a series of four blog posts where we will share his answers. You can read the first post on the latest energy-efficient technologies here and the second post on how to best implement new technologies here.

Q: What are the advantages of a motor that exceeds the latest NEMA Premium efficiency requirements?

First, let’s establish what the NEMA Premium label actually means.

The NEMA Premium energy efficiency motors program was established to specify products with the highest energy efficiency; NEMA Premium labeled electric motors help purchasers choose the most efficient motor systems, reduce electrical power consumption and costs, and improve system reliability.

Air compressors with motors that exceed the latest NEMA Premium efficiency requirements significantly reduce overall energy consumption and put manufacturers in an excellent position to meet future requirements.

Atlas Copco’s new GA VSD+ range was designed with future efficiency requirements in mind, incorporating a patented motor that exceeds the latest NEMA Premium efficiency requirements. The new design features a motor and drive train that share a single drive shaft; the drive train is also completely enclosed, resulting in a NEMA 4 rating for protection against dust, debris and water.

Incorporating a highly efficient motor is just one way that Atlas Copco has increased the overall efficiency of this compressor range.
